Accessibility statement

Odin Games is used in classrooms, so it has to work for every student in the room. This statement sets out what we aim for, what the product offers today, and where we know we fall short.

Our target

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We have not yet commissioned an independent external audit against that standard, so we describe the product as partially conformant: most of it meets the standard, and the exceptions below are known to us.

Adjustments built into the product

Every student can change these in Settings → Appearance:

  • Text size — four steps from small to extra large, applied across the app.
  • High contrast mode — increases contrast between text, controls and background.
  • Reduced animation — turns off interface animation for students who find movement distracting or nauseating.
  • Light, dark or system theme — including for the board and projector views used in lessons.

These preferences persist with the student's account, so they follow them between a school device and their own.

Known limitations

We would rather name these than let a school discover them in a lesson:

  • Timed questions. Practice and battle questions run against a timer. Teachers can raise the time per question when setting an assignment, but there is currently no per-student extra time allowance equivalent to an exam access arrangement.
  • Mathematical notation. Formulae are rendered with KaTeX. Screen reader support for mathematical expressions varies considerably between reader and browser combinations, and we have not yet verified every expression type we publish.
  • Diagrams. Some geometry questions rely on a diagram. Text alternatives are not yet complete across the whole question bank.
  • Live battles. The competitive multiplayer mode is inherently time-pressured and is not a suitable format for every student. All content in it is also available in untimed-equivalent revision assignments set by a teacher.

Reporting a barrier

If something in Odin Games is not usable for you or a student in your class, please tell us at contact@odingames.io. Describe the page and what happened, and include the assistive technology in use if relevant. We aim to respond within five working days.

Schools that need this statement in a specific format for their own accessibility reporting can request one from the same address, along with our safeguarding and data protection documentation.

This statement describes the current state of the product and is reviewed as accessibility work lands.
